The mountains are silent. The island becomes a poem.
The whole house receives one group at a time. The ridge of Snow Mountain at your back, Turtle Island out in the Pacific ahead. From the first light of morning to the sound of the tide at night, the hours belong to you.
Where the name comes from
If what lies ahead is already fixed as sorrow and grief, then however you walk it, you cannot avoid it and you cannot escape it — just as we met the rain on the long ridge.
The name comes from that rain. The weather of a life cannot be dodged — so rest here a while, and wait on the wind, wait for the moon.
Emptiness is the design
We removed everything that could be removed. There is no reception desk, no announcements on the hour, no breakfast you must appear for on time. What is left is a garden, a long veranda, a window that opens across an entire wall — and the freedom to decide what to do with them.
Four rooms, each facing its own way
Kiito and Kosyu face east; open the window and there is Turtle Island and the sea. Chosui and Suirei face west, toward the ridge of Snow Mountain turning colour in the evening. Half tatami, half timber floor; bedding you can set to your own firmness. Twelve guests at most — though we'd suggest six to eight. A space needs room to breathe.
From the entrance to the bath
Take off your shoes, cross the veranda, slide the shoji open. The path is deliberately indirect, because arriving should not happen all at once. The bath house sits furthest in, facing the bamboo.
The kitchen is yours
An open kitchen with a full set of vessels and flame. Local Yilan produce can be delivered on request — Sanxing scallions, Yuanshan rice, the day's catch from Daxi harbour. If you'd rather quietly cook a single pot of congee, that is good too.
A little over an hour from Taipei
Through the Hsuehshan Tunnel, then north along the coast on Provincial Highway 2. The last stretch is a lane between rice fields, with the sea at the end of it. That road is deliberate — it leaves the pace of the city behind you.

The Ridge — a vein of snow
Snow Mountain stands at our back. Between the clouds it keeps the silence and the stubbornness of long time. It is the spine of the land, and something to lean on.
The Island — a lamp of the heart
Turtle Island sits out on the ocean like a lamp that will not go out. The tide comes and goes; the quiet here stays.
Alpisle stands in Zhuangwei, Yilan — close to the sea without its noise, a house on its own without being lonely. It is hidden among the rice fields and irrigation channels of Sanxing. Mountain mist comes through the window at dawn; at night the stars and the frogs are the neighbours.
